What makes a woman straight? I shouldn’t have to go back to the birds and the bees, but let’s review. Strong women CAN BE straight. Women who lead CAN BE straight. Women who preach CAN BE straight. Women who have short hair CAN BE straight. Now that we’ve reviewed basic elementary education, let’s graduate to the next level.
I’m usually a fan of Broadway, but last Sunday was my breaking point. There’s creativity and then there’s just plain stupidity. Let’s Rewind. Pause. Scream. And just shake our head for a moment in utter silence. Yeah, it really was that jaw dropping. So, I decided to sit in front of the Television last weekend and what did I find to entertain my senses – Yep. You guessed it. The Tony’s. Most of the musical numbers were intriguing, eye catching and captivating. And then came “Fun Home”. Ummm. It’s never a good sign when you stand speechless in front of a TV and get a bit nauseous as the song escalates. The curtain opens and the spotlight centers on a 10 year old young girl, who’s reminiscing about childhood. Her adult self peers back and comes to the “loose belief” that her short hair cut, her strong personality and her leadership skills must mean one thing and one thing only – she’s gay. Yeah, I told you it was a loose conclusion. The question is why – why did she come to the belief that her sexuality had anything to do with her personality?
You might be questioning why this topic would possibly pertain to the church – but here are some thoughts and insights.
We as ministers, have equated heterosexuality with promiscuity. Click To Tweet So, we encourage those around us to be dating addicts – in and out of relationships; barely taking a breath. We excuse those who sleep around. We turn a blind eye towards those who hookup or are friends with benefits. Why? Because this proves them as straight. Christian Post conducted a study on the percentage of Evangelicals who have had sex before marriage. The numbers are astounding. “Of those 80 percent of Christians who said they have had sex before marriage, 64 percent have done so within the last year and 42 percent are in a current sexual relationship.” Pastors, it’s time to wake up. It’s time to stop turning a blind eye to the facts. It’s time to stop supporting promiscuity as proof of heterosexuality.
There are many Saturday nights I go dateless. Many weekends, I hangout alone. Many Sundays I sit by myself during worship. Yes, singleness is choice. But promiscuity is being pushed as a requirement – and it’s being pushed by those within the Church.
Proverbs 14:1 wisely states, “The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish tears it down with her own hands.”
Pastors, how are women in your church building their house? Are they building their character or their sexual reputation? Are they building their boundaries or their Little Black Book? Are you raising up women to be wise or foolish?
Ladies, get out your hammers and nails. Lay out your architectural plans. Endure callouses. Be strong. Be purposed. Pull your hair up. And start building your house.
